Governor Holcomb has declared March 19-25, 2017, as Home Education Week in Indiana!
It is scheduled to coincide with Indiana Association of Home Educators’ Annual Convention on March 24-25. It’s our week to celebrate home educators’ accomplishments!
INDIANA HOME EDUCATION PROCLAMATION
WHERE AS:
The legality of home education in the state of Indiana was recognized on the basis of State v. Peterman (1904), in which the Indiana Appellate Court defined a school as “ a place where instruction is imparted to the young” and held that a school at home counts as a private school; and
WHERE AS:
The purpose of home education is to encourage good character development, and high academic performance in a caring home, fully directed and funded by the parents or guardians; and
WHERE AS:
Many notable Americans from the early history of our nation to modern times have been home educated including George Washington, John Quincy Adams, James Garfield, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Booker T. Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Benjamin Franklin, Helen Keller, GeorgeWashington Carver, Susan B. Anthony; and
WHERE AS:
Studies denote that children educated at home develop self-confidence, manifest themselves as good citizens and are well prepared academically to meet the challenges presented to them in our world today; and
WHERE AS:
Indiana Home Educators and home instructed students should
be recognized for their efforts to improve the quality of education in Indiana; nowNOW, THEREFORE,
I, Eric Holcomb, Governor of the State of Indiana, do hereby proclaim……
