Indiana Association of Home Educators has concerns about a form of voucher known as an Education Scholarship Account or an Education Options Account that will be introduced in legislation in the 2017 session of the Indiana General Assembly.
As we have noted with the private school vouchers that were introduced in 2011, there are regulations associated with government funding. The distribution of taxpayer dollars must accompany accountability to the State. In our research related to this issue, we have come to better understand the history of school choice; therefore, we have grave concerns about using government funding for home education.
The Indiana Association of Home Educators (IAHE) is a 501c3 organization which advocates for a parents’ right to home educate their child(ren).
The following declaration clarifies our position regarding government funding of K-12 education.
Whereas, a parent has a fundamental right to home educate their child(ren); and
Whereas, the state of Indiana defines a home school as a non-accredited private school; and
Whereas, the state of Indiana uses taxpayer funds for the provision of K-12 education to the general public; and
Whereas, the state of Indiana exercises control of education for taxpayer funded K-12 education; and
Whereas, the provision of taxpayer funds for alternative education programs to non-accredited private schools (home schools), such as vouchers, Education Scholarship Accounts (ESA), or Education Options Account (EOA) mean that the parent is no longer able to choose their education free of government interference, now, therefore, be it resolved that
IAHE is opposed to the adoption of programs where taxpayer funds are available to non-accredited private schools (home schools) for K-12 education.
